Mark brings a wealth of experience to Yarra Capital Management, with an extensive global career based in London, New York and Melbourne in leadership roles at asset managers and owners.
Prior to joining Yarra Capital Management, Mark was Managing Director and President of the Future Fund, Australia’s $110+ billion-dollar sovereign wealth fund. His previous roles include CEO of Treasury Group, a listed fund of funds manager with in excess of $17 billion in aggregate funds under management, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO (EMEA) and Global CIO (Equities and Multi-Assets) of Credit Suisse Asset Management based in London with assets under management of over $250 billion.
Mark has also held high profile CIO and senior management roles with American Express Asset Management, Colonial First State Investments, Colonial Group and Bankers Trust.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Melbourne.
Michael BerkNON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Michael Berk is a Managing Director at TA Associates, where he co-leads the firm’s North America Services Group and focuses on investments in business and financial services companies.
He is a member of TA’s Core Investment and Portfolio Committees, and he also has responsibility for supporting TA’s Hong Kong office. Michael joined TA in 2004 and has approximately 20 years of experience in the private equity industry.
Michael serves on the Board of Directors of National IPA, Professional Warranty Service Corporation, SpeedCast International, Towne Park and Truck Hero. He also was actively involved in TA’s investments in AboveNet and Keeley Asset Management, and he formerly served on the Boards of Dealer Tire, Microban International and Triumph HealthCare. Prior to joining TA, Michael worked in private equity at JLL Partners and Frontenac Company.
Michael holds an AB degree, magna cum laude, in East Asian Studies from Harvard College, a JD degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School and an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School.
Masato DegawaNON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR | SENIOR ADVISER, JAPAN
A former President and Head of Blackrock Japan, Masato is one of the Asia Pacific region’s most experienced investment professionals.
In addition to his former role with BlackRock, Masato has previously held senior positions with Société Générale Asset Management (Japan) and J.P. Morgan Asset Management. He began his career with Morgan Stanley.
As a Senior Adviser based in Tokyo, Masato is responsible for advising on Yarra Capital Management’s approach to distribution and expansion of the firm’s offer to existing and prospective clients in the Asia Pacific region, with a major focus on Japan. He is also a key point of contact for the firm’s fixed income and multi-asset fund client base in Japan.
Masato holds an MA from the University of Oxford and is a CFA® charterholder.
Michael GordonNON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Michael has had a distinguished career in international investment markets, with a long and successful background working for some of the world’s pre-eminent asset managers.
A past Group Executive of Perpetual Investments, Michael began his career with Rothschild before moving to Schroders where he spent approximately nine years in a number of senior roles, including Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of its Australian business. His international experience includes 10 years with Fidelity International in Sydney, Hong Kong and London, where he became CIO, and two years with BNP Paribas Investment Partners as CIO of its Equities division, based in London.In addition to his role as a Non-Executive Director, Michael serves as Chairman of Yarra Capital Management’ Multi-Asset Asset Allocation Committee.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Technology Sydney.
Edward SippelNON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Ed is a Managing Director at TA Associates, where he is Co-Head of Asia and manages the Hong Kong office which he helped open in 2011. He focuses on minority equity investments, recapitalisations, and management buyouts of growth companies in the Asia Pacific region. Ed has lived and worked in Asia since 1997.
Ed has 20 years of experience in deal sourcing, due diligence, structuring, portfolio management and exits across numerous Asian markets. On behalf of TA Associates, Ed currently serves on the Board of Directors of SpeedCast Limited in Hong Kong (ASX:SDA), Nintex in Australia, YeePay in China, and was formerly on the Board of Directors of Forgame Tech in China, a TA Company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Previously, Ed was a Partner at Quadrangle Capital Partners, a global private equity firm. He opened the Hong Kong office for Quadrangle in 2007 and headed the firm’s Asian operations. Prior to joining Quadrangle, he worked at TVG Capital Partners as Managing Director and Partner, The Asian Infrastructure Fund, and Morgan Stanley based in in New York.
Ed holds a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University.
Dion HershanMANAGING DIRECTOR AND HEAD OF AUSTRALIAN EQUITIES
Dion is Managing Director and Head of Australian Equities. He is responsible for leading the Australian Equities team, focusing on large cap equities.
Prior to transitioning to Yarra Capital Management, Dion was the Head of Australian Equities of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, a position he held since July 2007.
He was previously a Fund Manager at Citadel Investment Group based in New York where he managed a long/short portfolio. He also worked as an Analyst and Fund Manager for Boston-based Fidelity Investments, where he was responsible for managing a diversified fund.
Before moving to the US, Dion worked at Boston Consulting Group where he undertook financial and quantitative analysis, project and client account management.
Dion holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University and an MBA from Columbia Business School, New York.
Katie HudsonEXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND HEAD OF AUSTRALIAN EQUITIES RESEARCH
Katie is a portfolio manager focused on the small and midcap universe and, in addition, serves as Head of Australian Equities Research.
Katie has more than 20 years of experience in investment markets, including roles as an equities research analyst and portfolio manager. Prior to transitioning to Yarra Capital Management, Katie was a portfolio manager and managing director at Goldman Sachs Asset Management.
Katie has previously worked at JM Financial Group on individual managed account portfolios and at AR Capital, a long/short fund, where she was involved with investment strategy and portfolio management and as an equities analyst and partner at JBWere.
Earlier in her career, Katie worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a senior manager primarily focused on mergers and acquisitions advisory and transaction support for seven years.
Katie holds a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of Melbourne and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.
Roy KeenanHEAD OF AUSTRALIAN FIXED INCOME
Roy is responsible for leading the Fixed Income team at Yarra Capital Management, focusing on Australian Fixed Income and Credit.
Roy has over 30 years’ investment experience both in asset management and trading, specialising in credit products since 1995. He has been part of the investment management team for the Yarra Enhanced Income Funds since the Funds’ inception in 2002 and continues to manage these Funds. Roy is also co-portfolio manager to the Yarra Income Plus Fund.
Before transitioning to Yarra Capital Management, Roy was Head of Australian Credit at Goldman Sachs Asset Management. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1992, where he worked within the firm’s securities division as a price maker/trader in government and corporate bonds, and from 1997 served as Head of the Fixed Income Desk where he specialised in broking and trading high yield products. He joined the Asset Management division in 2008. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Roy worked for four years in the Investment Management Division of the State Insurance Office. In 1988, Roy moved to the Treasury Corporation of Victoria and specialised in liability management of debt products, both domestically and offshore.
Roy holds a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from Swinburne University, Melbourne.
Brett DavidsonCHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Prior to joining Yarra Capital Management, Brett spent 10 years at Victorian Funds Management Corporation where he was Chief Operating Officer.
He previously spent 19 years at Merrill Lynch working across a range of roles including Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer across Capital Markets and Investment Management in locations across Europe, Asia and Australia. His most recent role at Merrill Lynch was in Melbourne as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers.
Brett is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He holds a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Adelaide.
Ben LyonsSENIOR INVESTMENT MANAGER
Ben has over 15 years of experience in the equity markets, and is responsible for research and analysis on the Resources and Energy sectors.
Prior to joining Yarra Capital Management, he was a Portfolio Manager at boutique Australian fund manager ATI Asset Management, where he also conducted research coverage of the Resources and Energy sectors.
Previously Ben spent eight years on the sell-side, with senior analytical roles at Macquarie and Citigroup, formulating and communicating investment strategies for institutional investors in Australian and global metals and mining equities.
Ben holds a Bachelor of Accounting from Monash University.
Mark O’NeillSENIOR INVESTMENT MANAGER
Mark focuses primarily on portfolio risk, analysis and the construction of Australian Equity strategies. Mark also shares responsibility for equity trading.
Mark joined Yarra Capital Management from Goldman Sachs Asset Management where he had worked since 1999, initially based in London working in the Risk Management and Analysis team.
He joined the Equity Portfolio Construction team in 2004 focusing on Global & European Equity strategies. Mark transferred to the Australian team in 2011.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Business (Hons) from Southampton Solent University and holds the Investment Management Certificate from the UK Society of Investment Professionals.
He is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) charterholder.
Marcus RyanSENIOR INVESTMENT MANAGER
Marcus is responsible for research and analysis of real estate, healthcare and building materials securities within the Australian equities team.
He is a co-portfolio manager for the Yarra Real Assets Securities Fund and Yarra Income Plus Fund and is actively involved with the Tax Advantaged Investor investment strategy.
Marcus previously spent 11 years as an investment manager at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, where he also covered real estate, insurance and building materials.
Marcus holds a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce from Monash University, including abroad programs at Boston College, USA (Carroll School of Management) and the University of Ulm, Germany (Advanced Materials).

Phil StranoSENIOR INVESTMENT MANAGER
With an extensive career in asset management and institutional banking, Phil is a credit specialist with a deep understanding of the fixed income landscape.
In 10 years managing portfolios and 20 years analysing financial markets/securities, Phil has amassed extensive experience in all major credit segments. These include listed/unlisted, rated/unrated, investment and sub-investment grade, bonds/loans and derivative instruments.
Prior to joining Yarra Capital Management in May 2017, Phil spent 8 years with Victorian Funds Management Corporation (VFMC) in senior roles managing credit portfolios. He previously spent approximately 4 years with Challenger as a Senior Analyst and a Portfolio Manager, following more than 10 years with National Australia Bank where he worked first as an Economist and Analyst before moving into the institutional banking team to cover credit.
Phil holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from Latrobe University and a Graduate Diploma Applied Finance and Investment (FINSIA).
Edward WallerSENIOR INVESTMENT MANAGER
Ed is responsible for research and analysis of banks, diversified financials, infrastructure and utilities securities within the Australian equities team.
Ed is a co-portfolio manager for the Yarra Real Assets Securities Fund and is responsible for trade execution. Ed previously worked for 10 years as an investment manager for Goldman Sachs Asset Management.
Prior to that he was a Research Analyst at Adviser Edge Investment Research where he analysed managed investment scheme projects across a broad range of agricultural industries.
Ed holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (First Class Honours) from The University of Melbourne.
Sam HeffernanINVESTMENT MANAGER – CREDIT
Sam is responsible for analysing and researching Australian investment and non-investment grade corporate credit within Yarra Capital Management’s Fixed Income team.
He has seven years’ experience as a credit market analyst, covering securitised products and corporate debt, and joined Yarra Capital Management in October 2017 from S&P where he was a senior credit analyst responsible for a broad portfolio of listed and unlisted companies across a range of industries.
Sam has a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Leeds and a Master of Applied Finance from Kaplan Professional Education. A qualified mechanical engineer, Sam commenced his career with global environmental consulting firm Leighton O’Brien.
Martina SongINVESTMENT MANAGER
Martina contributes to the Firm’s macroeconomic research function and provides additional support managing exposures across all Australian fixed interest and multi-sector portfolios.
Martina joined Yarra Capital Management in October 2017 from Westpac, where she was a Macro Strategist in the Financial Markets team covering G10 foreign exchange, Australian export commodities and Australian interest rate markets. Prior to commencing at Westpac in 2014, she held roles with leading global financial institutions including Credit Suisse, HSBC and Morgan Stanley.
Martina has a BA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford and has also completed programs with the London School of Economics and Harvard University.
Nicholas CurtisINVESTMENT ANALYST
Nicholas is an analyst covering Telecommunications and Consumer Staples within the Australian Equities team.
Previously Nicholas worked for four years for Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM), most recently as an Associate in the Institutional Business supporting client relationships in Victoria, South Australia, ACT and Tasmania. Hewas a member of GSAM’s Third Party Distribution team focused on client portfolio construction and business development. Nicholas joined GSAM as part of its Graduate Analyst program, which included a three-year training course run by Goldman Sachs University.
Nicholas holds a Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) from Monash University.
Tina EveristINVESTMENT ANALYST
Tina provides research and analysis on portfolios and fixed income and macro-economic activity within the Fixed Income team.
She also shares responsibility for trading across a range of fixed income, multi-sector and money market capabilities.
Tina has more than 11 years of experience in asset management, commencing her career in June 2006 at Goldman Sachs Asset Management. She has worked across a number of teams, including product development, client services, fund controllers and product management.

Nick previously spent 5 years with Goldman Sachs Asset Management as a Key Account Manager, responsible for leading the Australian sales team and developing business relationships with key accounts, dealer groups and platforms nationally and advisers within Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia.
Nick has a Master of Applied Finance and Diploma of Financial Planning from Kaplan Professional Education and an Advanced Diploma in Business from the University of Southern Queensland.
Matthew PatrickDISTRIBUTION MANAGER
Matthew is responsible for developing relationships across research houses, institutional consultants and for sales coverage of institutional clients in Victoria.
Matthew previously spent 6 years with Goldman Sachs Asset Management and was involved in the coverage of the research houses and institutional consultants as part of the Australian consultant relations team. Prior to this he was an Associate in the Private Wealth Management division of JBWere.

Miyuki is responsible for supporting Yarra Capital Management’s Japanese clients.
She has more than 6 years of marketing communications experience in retail funds management, most recently working as an Acquisition Marketing Specialist in Tokyo for Legg Mason where she had responsibility for marketing and sales documentation.
Miyuki holds a Graduate Diploma of Marketing from Swinburne University of Technology.
